Universitatea Craiova

Universitatea Craiova currently operates through the football project launched in 2013 in association with the university sports club. Its claimed tradition begins in 1948 with the team later known as Știința and Universitatea. Historical generations won four championships by 1991 and reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1983, following a European Cup quarter-final appearance in 1982. Ion Oblemenco and the Craiova Maxima generation remain central to that tradition. Succession is disputed. CS Universitatea argues that the original section’s honours were not transferred to the company separated in 1991, while FC U Craiova 1948 claims continuity through that team. The consulted source records judicial decisions supporting CS’s claim and LPF recognition in 2017 of trophies from 1948–1991, but also identifies subsequent litigation. Trademark rights, ownership of historical honours and succession to a competition place are therefore treated as separate questions. The project established in 2013 reached the top division in 2014. It won the Romanian Cup in 2018 and 2021 and the Supercup in 2021. Documentation for 2025–2026 records qualification for the Conference League’s main phase and a domestic league and cup double. The club uses the new Ion Oblemenco Stadium, opened in 2017, and retains white and blue as its identifying colours. LPF includes the current team in the 2026–2027 Superliga.
