FK Csíkszereda

FK Csíkszereda represents Miercurea Ciuc and connects its present identity with the beginnings of local football in 1904. That date describes a tradition involving reorganisations and interruptions rather than the uninterrupted existence of one legal entity. Earlier local teams used names including AEF, AS Miercurea Ciuc, IUPS, Tractorul and Rapid. Political changes in the region also placed the city’s football in both Romanian and Hungarian competition systems at different times. Much of the twentieth century was spent in county competitions and the third national tier. Financial difficulties led to withdrawal from competition in 2000. The modern project restarted in 2010 as CSM Miercurea Ciuc and adopted the FK Csíkszereda name in 2012. Academy development accompanied a return to the third division in 2014. Promotion to the second division in 2019 came alongside a Romanian Cup run to the quarter-finals, including the elimination of Dinamo. The club has not won a senior national championship or the Romanian Cup. Its first top division campaign began in 2025, and LPF confirms participation in the 2026–2027 season. Home matches take place at the Municipal Stadium. Red and black identify the current team; these colours accompany a recent rise that has brought a club previously associated with the lower divisions into Romania’s highest national competition.
