About the club

CFR Cluj grew out of the railway community of Cluj, where Kolozsvári Vasutas Sport Club was established in 1907. The CFR name subsequently connected the team to the Romanian railway network. Its early history was largely spent in regional competitions and the lower national divisions. Local mergers also produced the names CSM Cluj and Clujeana before CFR returned in 1967. A promotion in 1969 began an important period under coach Constantin Rădulescu. Fifth place in 1973 marked the high point of that spell, but relegation in 1976 began a long absence from the top division. The club returned in 2004 after renewed investment and soon expanded its ambitions beyond domestic survival. It reached an Intertoto Cup final in 2005 and completed its first Romanian league and cup double in 2008. Champions League group appearances brought international visibility, including an away victory against Roma in 2008. Five consecutive championships from 2018 through 2022 later established another sustained period of success. The consulted encyclopedic record lists eight league championships and five Romanian Cups. White and burgundy remain the club’s identifying colours, while its ground in the Gruia district carries the name of Rădulescu. The city derby against Universitatea Cluj connects this modern record to a much older local rivalry. LPF lists CFR among the clubs participating in the 2026–2027 Superliga season.
