About the club

Petrolul Ploiești traces its history to Juventus București, formed in 1924 through the combination of Triumf and Romcomit. The first national championship came in 1930. Following several name changes, the team moved to Ploiești in 1952 and adopted the Petrolul name in 1957. Its connection with the oil industry, together with yellow and blue colours, became central to its local identity. Championships in 1958, 1959 and 1966 brought the historical total to four. Romanian Cup victories in 1963, 1995 and 2013 represent three different generations. A victory against Liverpool in 1966 remains a significant European result, although Petrolul did not progress from that European Cup tie. In the early 2010s, the team returned to the domestic podium and Europa League qualifying rounds. Organisational changes require separation from the sporting tradition. The 2003 arrangement with Astra altered the legal structure, while the bankruptcy of SC FC Petrolul SA in 2016 ended that company’s existence. Former players and supporters established ACS Petrolul 52 and restarted in county football. According to the consulted source, the new organisation leased the club’s brand identity from the municipality in 2017. Promotion in 2022 restored top division football under the Petrolul name. The current team appears in LPF’s 2026–2027 Superliga records and plays at Ilie Oană Stadium.
