About the club

FC Argeș traces its origins to Dinamo Pitești, established in 1953. The FC Argeș name was adopted in 1967 and became closely associated with Nicolae Dobrin’s generation. Coached by Florin Halagian, the team won the Romanian championship in 1972 and 1979. These remain the two league titles defining its most successful era. A home victory over Real Madrid in the 1972 European Cup also became an enduring part of its international record. The club continued to develop players locally. A later generation, including Adrian Mutu, took Argeș back onto the league podium and into the UEFA Cup during the 1990s. It has not won the Romanian Cup. Administrative relegation in 2009 and deteriorating finances preceded bankruptcy in 2013. The current sporting organisation emerged from SCM Pitești rather than the uninterrupted legal survival of the bankrupt company. In 2017, the municipality purchased the FC Argeș brand and made it available to SCM’s football team, which had just reached the second division. Supporters also organised a separate project named FC Argeș 1953. Promotion in 2020 brought the current team back to the top flight, followed by relegation in 2023 and another promotion in 2025. LPF includes Argeș in the 2026–2027 Superliga. The team uses the ground in Mioveni while its traditional Nicolae Dobrin stadium is being replaced.
