Corvinul Hunedoara

Corvinul Hunedoara traces its football tradition to Fero Sport Hunedoara, established in 1921. The city’s steel industry shaped both the team’s identity and earlier names, including Metalul. Corvinul became the name associated with its strongest top division years. Under Mircea Lucescu, the club developed a generation that helped it finish third in 1981–1982 and qualify for the UEFA Cup. That historical tradition spans several organisations rather than one uninterrupted legal entity. Relegation in 1992 was followed by financial difficulties and the disappearance of the original senior team. Corvinul 2005, FC Hunedoara and CS Hunedoara subsequently represented different attempts to preserve local football. The consulted account records liquidation of the old organisation in 2016 and recovery of the historic brand in 2021, supported by the municipality and people associated with the club. The revived project achieved an exceptional result in 2024, winning the Romanian Cup while playing in the second division and returning to European competition. According to the sourced chronology, the Romanian federation’s Executive Committee approved the transfer of sporting activity from the public club to a private association in July 2025. This restructuring removed an obstacle to top division promotion. Corvinul then won promotion in 2026, bringing Hunedoara back to the highest level after 34 years.
